I’m a Romany at heart
And from another era.
My bandanna on my head
I roam o’er the sierra
Looking, looking for a spot
To make my camp for the night,
Knowing if I’m under stars
Then that spot will be just right.
How I treasure my freedom!
How I treasure God’s great gifts-
A purpose for life and time-
As through the hourglass it sifts.
I live each day so fully
There is nothing to regret.
I’m part of rugged Nature
There is nothing I’ll forget-
The golden sun a’shining,
The molten silver moon light,
Singing pebbles in the brooks,
The dark magic of the night.
Oh, I’m a wild Romany
My heart is gentle and pure
I rove over hill and dale
My stamina will endure.
I need no covered wagon,
My backpack serves me quite well.
My age is that of the hills
Which time doesn’t seem to quell.
My face is a map of life,
Every little crook and bend
Leads to another pathway
I travel to journey’s end.
I’m a Romany at heart.
My soul sings out to the trees,
I follow every rainbow,
I sail along on the breeze.
Nature and I become one.
Its splendour is my domain.
I’m content with my whole life
And happy I shall remain
A Romany through and through
Touched lightly by God’s great grace,
Wandering o’er this great land-
Where I go I leave no trace.
