Theodore PanDeva Zagar

 

Ted Zagar left for God on January 18, 2022. He was 75.
He grew up in East Chicago, Indiana, a steel mill town. He worked
in the mill while attending college and graduate school with 2 degrees,

1 an M.A. and one in library science. He became a vegetarian around 1970 and shortly after a vegan. For many years he ate only uncooked vegetables and fruits. His life of animal rescue had begun earlier, including dogs, cats, birds along the Lake shores. His day involved taking care of rescue animals before and after work often til bed. He also did astrological charts and wrote hundreds n columns
for the Hammond newspaper as well as many more advocating
nonviolent diet in magazines such as Animals' Agenda and Vegetarian

Times. He took care of his mother for most of his life.

He was one of four organizers of the Burger King boycott which was begun when the corporation announced it was introducing veal (a euphemism for slain baby calves). After 3 years, the corporation withdrew veal.

His compassion was allencompassing, including everyone he met,
mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. His woman companion of many years

succumbed to a longterm illnes. He is survived by his sister Kathy of Florida

who spent years as a fulltime volunteer helping him in myriad ways and by

his sister Cookie who worked hard getting him into an assisted living

place near to her. He is also survived by a niece and many cousins


Connie Salamone, founder in 1970 of a vegan ecofeminist group,

called Ted a sweet gentle giant, truly a teddy bear.
