She was given dreams in which
books blocked the sunlight
streaming through her windows..
or their shelves toppled over
burying her..
how heavy a number are..
as they weigh her down
and attachment to them
blocks her from freedom..
as they encourage her
to live in her mind
not her heart
how many are printed on the
carcasses of living trees
whose baby birds were smashed
.. unable to fly away..
and yet.. when she is sad..
authors' spirits enkindle
her mind with the torches
hidden in the pages..
and the words of some
clear debris from the
road
between her mind and her
heart
Author's Notes/Comments:
A woman with a purple aura told poster that
she was considered retarded because she could not read..
her concentration was diverted by an alcoholic father at home
and a sexual molester in the neighborhood..
she was not able to read until the age of 14 .. when
Harriet Leaf.. head children's librarian at the ASPCL..
took her under her wing and taught her daily to read.. then others discovered that
the woman is brilliant..God bless those who take the time as Harriet
did
