Pitchforks And Federal Marshals Before Civil War

The Dred Scott decision in the Supreme Court before the Civil War

had mandated the arrest of fugitive slaves in the North. Into Mechanicsburg

Ohio the marshals came to arrest a fugitive slave. The local sheriffs and Mennonite farmers met the marshals with pitchforks and prevented the

arrest.    Thank you to Susan C for telling the story.
