firemen .. there are few firewomen...
turn off the water when apartments
get inundated by absentee tenants
whose water continues to flow.
They help babies having trouble
breathing, rescue frightened
cats in trees, take the blood pressure

readings of those who stop by, and are on call
to help fallen victims of dizziness
who can't get up. Their backs are injured carrying

350 pound women and men downstairs.

footnote; Different fire departments fulfill

different functions. A special mention to the Dodge

Ave station in Ohio whose men in 1941 saved a child with

whooping cough who had turned blue and who prevented

ceilings from falling in after shutting off water.
