You Chose To

There are far too many pebbles now
Falling in drop by drop.
They’ve outpaced what the cup will allow,
Spilling over the top.

Your fingerprints have washed away -
How fortunate for you.
I bear their stain by light of day
Wishing I could be new.

It was second nature to draw my blood,
Too easy to push me into the mud.

You play the hero when the sun shines
But desecrated me in the dark
Like a frog plucking flies from the vines
Or hungry beavers munching the bark.

I reached out in need of a helping hand
But you chose to punch me down.
Your cruelty won out like it was planned,
Black waters in which to drown.

Now all systems go to sanction your choice
And slowly but surely silence my voice.

Sometimes a cloud casts such a shadow
That life itself feels diminished.
It matters not how gently we row
If a sudden storm means we’re finished.

Yes, once I laid claim to an open heart,
The kind that’s filled with compassion and trust.
It was your pleasure to tear it apart,
The best of me left in the rain to rust.

I stare out the window, my cancer suffusing the daylight,
And the spirit I have left in me longs to give up the fight.

There are far too many pebbles now
Falling in drop by drop.
They’ve outpaced what the cup will allow,
Spilling over the top.
