The last train left the station as I watched.
The conductor looked back with a blank stare.
So close yet so far, another plan scotched
With me on the platform worse for the wear.
Still, what’s another problem I can’t fix?
It’s familiar like the sea to the shore.
One more setback in a series of licks
Means it cannot hurt like it did before.
I'm here again, no wind at my back,
But I’m happy to know that you’re on track.
If it couldn’t be me, I’m glad it was you.
I watched you wave with a lump in my throat,
Your hand stretching out of your overcoat.
In a world of darkness you bring love and light –
That it has come back to you is only right.
You’ve given me faith that wishes can come true
And that it could even happen for me, too.
If it couldn’t be me, I’m glad it was you.
The whistle’s roar wrapped itself around me
As the stately wheels thundered clickety-clack.
Now only silent woodlands surround me
As I leave the railway and make my way back.
But the night holds possibility
For stories and stars that could prove redeeming.
I’ll embrace the lush tranquility
As a new opportunity for dreaming.
The best parts of you have helped me to grow.
Now off you go. I just thought you should know…
If it couldn’t be me, I’m glad it was you.
