I’ve chased many dreams down these city streets
As the sun stood ready to rise and set,
Once was pure only to wake up in sheets
With choices I’d sooner choose to forget.
Of the ones for whom I fought tooth and nail
But a few are left firmly beside me,
The rest buying popcorn to watch me fail
Or waiting to oppose or deride me.
With wins and losses have come much learning,
The richness of life found after the rain,
Yet a fire remains still somehow burning
That for all this time I could not contain.
Now studying flames affords perspective
And I can finally be objective –
For all of the fighting and restless pursuit,
The defeats and detours that pushed and shoved,
Cliched though it is, getting down to the root,
All I really wanted was to be loved.
