Fire and Glass

Your one-track mind never quits

Till you can lay claim to the very best.

What works for you is what fits

And you have little patience for the rest.

I might have known that to do the same

Would put me in a place to be shattered.

All at once I was the one to blame

Like none of your choices ever mattered.

You’re well-served by your tunnel vision

Until you regret your decision.

And I don’t have the heart to give you mine,

For a second more put it on the line.

I thought we’d be together till the end

But it’s been so long since you’ve been a friend.

We’ve arrived at more than an impasse –

Together we’re just fire and glass.

I took a mental vacation,

Stopped questioning what I may lack.

My only source of frustration

Is I let this train jump the track.

I noticed my lack of self-respect

When you clumsily knocked me off the shelf.

Well, did I not invite your neglect

Thinking of you before I did myself?

You can’t help what’s in your nature to do,

But it’s led to darkness I can’t walk through.

No, I don’t have the heart to give you mine,

For a second more put it on the line.

I thought we’d be together till the end

But it’s been so long since you’ve been a friend.

We’ve arrived at more than an impasse –

Together we’re just fire and glass.
