Like the jasmine and the sunflowers I’m in full bloom,
Fevered and flushed as the summer lads begin to loom.
None gather honeysuckle once it wilts
Or stop for roses with faded petals.
I well understand how the axis tilts,
The universe as it shifts and settles.
They’ll notice my colors – of that I’m certain –
How they sparkle vivid and bright,
Piercing the afternoon.
I’m safely distanced from the final curtain
As long as I’m firmly in their sight,
Waiting to make them swoon.
They’ll buzz around me like honeybees
If my fragrance continues to last,
Drawn forth to answer my sweet siren call.
It just takes one to get on his knees
And pick me before the season’s passed,
The charms of August succumbing to fall.
Like the jasmine and the sunflowers I’m in full bloom,
Fevered and flushed as the summer lads begin to loom.
