Heart of Ice

Would that I’d laid claim to a heart of ice,
Become fixed and frigid to human touch.
I didn’t know to feel I’d pay a price
And I have found the cost is far too much.
They say life is a busy game of chance
And most pleasure is preceded by pain,
But as I turn now with a backward glance
Just what was worth it for so little gain?
I’ve long grown weary of this lonesome road
And can’t help wond'ring “When does it end?”
Silent here, with day’s final light bestowed,
A frozen creek reflects my one true friend.
Well aware of my blood and flesh and bone
I will have to make the journey alone.
