The Happiness I Once Knew

One forgotten toothbrush on your sink,

Left behind as I sometimes tend to do,

And your temper puts you on the brink,

Incensed to find a vestige of me and you.

I realized my love had been laid to waste

As my mouth filled with a metallic taste.

So pardon my lying here breathless and blue –

I’m recalling the happiness I once knew.

Bright yellow skies once lit the way,

Suns like lemon drops to sanction my glee.

To hold you even for a day

Remained my pure and simple ecstasy.

I cannot crack the code nor do the math.

The answer lies between your head and heart

With "No Trespassing" marked bold on the path -
Something precious, then, never got its start.

You throw your weight around with such forethought,

Excuses and entreaties applied with equal measure.

Who could have known a battle would be wrought

To secure a simple morsel of yesterday’s pleasure?

I worked so hard at holding back the years

And all I have left is a flood of tears.

So pardon my lying here breathless and blue -

I’m recalling the happiness I once knew.
