I saw a dog lean out a car window,
His long, pink tongue glistening in the sun.
He smiled back although he doesn’t know
How very much the two of us are one.
Different players will inhabit this space,
A new dog and man where these crossroads meet –
If time knows one thing it’s how to replace
And it’s true of life that all things repeat.
Like the sandpipers that rush on the beach
And the daffodils drinking the sun’s rays
I savor the beauty within my reach
Since its splendor can’t be mine for always.
One must make peace with the way of all things
And I am certainly no exception.
In spite of anything the future brings
Forward is the only right direction.
To squander life’s pleasures would be a sin.
From this day on I’ll let happiness in.
