If Only

The night we met is preserved for always,

Sights and scents now immortal in my mind.

Thought of loving you the rest of our days

Filled me with a joy like no other kind.

Tonight he cuts in, reaching for my hand.

He wants me to follow…I think I might.

I’m thrilled to taste the glow of something grand

Though you’re never completely out of sight.

Oh, what we’d have shared, just you and I,

Were it not for the voices in your head.

They’ve long set the stage for our goodbye

And I now surrender to what they’ve said.

I would have belonged to you most rightly

If only you had held my hand tightly.
