Where Your Road Leads

Look at us in the mirror staring wide-eyed,
Poring over the map even after all these miles,
Having traveled so many of them in stride
Out on the periphery, a couple of exiles.

We should know each dead end, every landmark,
But we arrive at this fork in the road
Nervous as our sunny skies become dark,
Afraid we can't shoulder this heavy load.

Will we part company at this late hour,
Tears in my eyes as you fade into the mist?
For the life of me I haven't the power
To put a positive spin on that plot twist.

I focused on the faces at the truck stop.
Yours stood out, and since then nothing's been the same.
Are the bridges we've crossed about to drop?
Will we return to the depths from whence we came?

I don't know where we'll go from here
Or if we'll make the trip side by side,
But one thing is perfectly clear -
I'm glad I've been along for the ride.

No matter how much I love you so
I know you can't lose sight of what your heart needs.
Still, wherever it may have you go
I hope I'm not far behind where your road leads.
