Jealousy

He’s so beautiful, so young and fragile,
Utmost deserving of your loving care.
What a promising boy, fresh and agile,
Vast opportunities awaiting there,
And I, with my dark corners, my cold bed,
Survey his smile through bittersweet eyes
Which fill with tears of happiness and dread,
A mixed reaction I cannot disguise.
I see all his future sprawling ahead,
A blank canvas, you standing by his side,
As I’m remanded to my old homestead
Where little more than broken dreams reside.
I toast his honor, I’m worse for the wear.
Hear my words. Behold the jealousy there.
