The Ice Cream Man

Dreams of superheroes who always win
And animals that talk to each other,
Angels dancing on the head of a pin
And protection of father and mother;
Such dreams, once easy, fade away in youth.
Time slips and slides. It's nothing short of cruel.
That it can't return is the harshest truth.
Just who decides this sad, unbending rule?
A cheery melody pervades the air
And for a moment a smile results
Until it dawns on me that man out there
Does not aim to woo the ears of adults.
His music trails off. I pause longingly -
Couldn't he stop just one more time for me?
