16. Start at Zero

It’s time to rebuild and start from scratch,
Lay down the bricks and begin anew,
Commence from the foundation up
Without accepting less than my due.
I will breathe again and lose you,
Smile again and choose to
Make my exit when the carrot is jerked
Refusing to be deluded, overworked
For your benefit when the thanks I am given
Is conduct that simply cannot be forgiven.
I was good to you, thought you a friend,
Yet now I look through a different lens.
All that you are is most conditional,
And I, my dear, am most transitional
When faced with the likes of you –
I take what is mine and bid adieu.
I can see when the stage has been slanted
Leaving me to be taken for granted,
I can sense when it is time to move on
With only myself to rely upon.
When the more you give the less you get
You should climb aboard the first leaving jet.
Flying solo is lonely but I have done it all along,
And the journey thus far has helped me learn to keep strong.
Through it all there is so much to learn,
A lifetime’s store of truths to discern
Such as only you can be your own hero
And sometimes to do so you must start at zero.
