07. Sometimes I Do

These blacks and whites and pinks and blues

Blended often serve to confuse

Those who are not of them –

They cannot understand.

Why don’t you grab each hand

And charge in opposite directions?

You would see the position you put me in,

The condition that wears me thin.

All this splicing and dicing and legitimizing,

All this pitter and patter and scandalizing

Brings us away from community

And erodes our foundation.

The trials you’ve faced should bring you to my side

Yet your derision rings clear.

Likenesses in this case cause a great divide

So I’m not wanted here.

So readily you turn your back to me,

Yet a look in the mirror will surely reveal

These so-called flaws which you abhor in me

Are as much you as me in reality,

Nothing to conceal.

Tell me honestly why you let us get drawn apart

When we should really be allies in matters of heart?

True, sometimes I don’t and sometimes I do,

But that doesn’t make me any less than you.
