My grandmother's high heels

My Grandmother’s High Heels (Regina Tejeda)

My grandmother has a huge closet full of high heels. It seems as if she has one pair for every occasion, she has big heels, small heels and every colored heels. My grandmother is always wearing high heels, whether we’re at home watching TV, or getting a tan at the beach. Even when its freezing outside, even when its pouring rain. Since I was little I remember her wearing high heels and I also remember spending hours in her closet admiring her vast collection. I also remember trying them on, they were too big on me of course and very uncomfortable, but I couldn’t wait for the day that I could wear my grandmother’s shoes and be like her. I never understood why she liked wearing such uncomfortable shoes, I still don’t. A couple of years ago she had a knee injury so she had to get surgery. The doctor told her to stop wearing heels. She obviously didn’t want to stop wearing them, even after my father told her, even after all her grandsons told her, even when she knew it could cause her even more problems. She was not going to stop wearing high heels. Now at her seventy-five years of age she’s still wearing them all day, everyday. Whenever I think about my grandmother I think about her high heels, about how she was always looking so elegant and classy. Since first thing in the morning until very late at night you can find her wearing heels. My grandmother has an interesting story for each pair of high heels, “these ones were a gift from your grandfather” or “these ones where from the day we got married”. Each pair symbolized a story, and every story was a happy memory she had. Maybe she was always wearing her high heels to re-live the moments in her life where she was the happiest. Or maybe she wears them as a way for her to feel young and beautiful (which she is). I don’t know her reasons for wearing high heels all the time, I don’t think anyone knows. I just know that when I think about her I think about elegance and I think about a powerful woman. I just hope that when I’m her age I can walk in high heels as well as she does and that I can have a collection as big as hers.
