A Tale of Two Geese

Once, a boy ventured into a forest, climbing over the fence that bordered his home. There, he found an unremarkable goose. Yet, as he spent more time with it, he discovered it was far from ordinary. Once a month, the goose laid a golden egg, which it generously allowed the boy to take home.

The goose thrived as long as it stayed close to its forest home, laying golden eggs in contentment. One day, the boy decided to bring the goose home. Sadly, away from the forest, the goose grew weak and stopped laying golden eggs. Distressed, the boy sought help from his brother, who knew a little about the goose. Together, they tried to restore the goose to its former state by returning it to the forest.

However, during a fierce storm, they lost each other in the woods. The brother disappeared, and the goose never laid another golden egg. Heartbroken, his boy set up camp near the goose’s home, visiting it daily. Sometimes, he even stayed overnight to spend more time outdoors.

One day, a goose with a golden feather appeared, occasionally allowing the boy to take that golden feather home. While this consoled him, he couldn’t shake the guilt over his brother’s loss. He brought the golden-feathered goose home to show his family, but it too grew weak and stopped producing golden feathers.

Frustrated, he threw the ailing goose back into the forest and ran to his room. From a drawer, he retrieved a golden feather and a golden egg, reminiscing about better days. He packed them away in a box and hid it in the cellar. Focusing on his studies, he led a seemingly normal life.

As a young man, the fantasy of the geese faded into memory, yet the reality remained locked away. Whenever he felt unsure, sad, or lonely, he would visit the cellar to look at the golden egg and golden feather. Quickly, he would put them back, knowing that that life was no longer his. Occasionally, during walks in the forest, he thought he glimpsed the goose, but part of him never wanted to see it again, even if it was his last connection to his lost brother.

His childhood, marked by a fairy tale, was gone. Yet, his dreams were forever filled with geese, a bittersweet reminder of what once was.
