Thrice Cursed Mankind.

Laughter filled the house for a while.

Warmth and light flooded the rooms.

For a madcap half hour she was there.

Tickling the children, teasing the dog.

As if nothing had happened.

The visitor, unaware of the magic she weaves,

Drives the bitter cold shadows from the house.

The brief, all too brief, respite brings me hope.

Happy children, with good night kisses, go giggling to bed.

The visitor; my wife, vibrant, and lively, implodes.

Like a collapsing star.

To the cold and lifeless mass.

That occupies her space.

Her fire extinguished by the memory.

Of another child and kisses long gone.

This is our punishment,

Thrice cursed mankind.

Cast out of the garden.

Set apart from the other beasts.

To stalk this world for all of time.

Burdened under the crushing weight.

Of compassion

Understanding

And

Memory
