Poem for my Friend

The distraction of the day

Reminds us we don’t want to be alone.

The night reminds us we are alone.

The sadness of your night cannot

Be distracted by Mike’s day anymore.

You only have painted memories

Reflections that are teasing

While you grieve something that was so genuine.

Matthais, there was no meaning in his death

That doesn’t detract from the meaning

His life had for you.

The bond you had with him wasn’t destroyed.

Its an obligation to go forward now

Because Mike made you something better.

We have no soul

But the best of us have a constitution.

A sort of gravity others can revolve around

It’s a pulling force that helps others forget

The emptiness that wants us to collapse.

But our search for the light which might save us

Is always solitary in the end.

When we die alone though

We are the people that others helped us to be.

My nights are animated by the light you have given me.

Mikes death shouldn’t extinguish the torch

He helped light in defiance of the night.
