A rewrite of the Elton John classic in memory of my father Melvin Eugene Thompson July 29, 1947-Jan 20, 2011
Goodbye Melvin Eugene
Daddy, truely you were my all
You had the grace to hold yourself
When like slime that woman crawled
Taught me how to love and to work
Even through sometimes I was a bratty pain
Accepted me even when I was too lazy to get on that threadmill
So proudly you handed down to me your mama's name
And it seems to me all through our life
You lived like a candle in the wind
Letting her be the one you clinged to
When the rain set in
And I wish I could have saved you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Daddy, I'll make sure
Your legend never will
Loneliness was tough'
With her
The toughest game you ever played
Upon your broken heart
She left the cruelest scar
And pain was the price you always paid
Even when you died
Oh that witch still hated you
All to me she had to say
About your funeral was
Don't care to go
I'm not in the mood
And it seems to me all through our life
You lived like a candle in the wind
Letting her be the one you clinged to
When the rain set in
And I wish I could have saved you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Daddy, I'll make sure
Your legend never will
Goodbye Melvin Eugene
Daddy, truely you were my all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While like slime around you that woman crawled
Goodbye Melvin Eugene
From a daughter who loved you
More then you'll ever know
So much to me you were
Daddy, my hero
