Sad Summer

She sat on the beach

Not far from the reef

And sang as she built castles

Near the end of her feet

And everyday

When I walked by

She would lift her head

And squeal out a "hi"

Each day was the same

The smile never to fail

Yet with each passing day

Her face grew more pale

The castles she built

Grew smaller in size

As a deep, hollow look

Replaced her sparkling eyes

Until one summer day

Her smile wasn't there

And the spot where she sat

Was empty and bare

And as I stood wondering

Having nothing to say

I soon found what happened

That sad summer day

For the beautiful smile

That brightened my days

Looked up from the newspaper

On the obituary page
