a different kind of courage

SHORT STORIES

It started as a normal day at hardee's. I was taking orders like I usually do. Then my mother and her husband came in. She ordered her food and went to sit down. I took her order out to her and she started talking shit. She was talking about how stupid I was and how she hated my father's family. I told her to shut up and she started hitting me. She wanted me to fight her and I wouldn't. She pulled a knife and attack me. I got away from her and yelled at her. I told her you may be my mother but you are not my mom. My mom and dad are Denise and Brian Green.

My supervisor called the cops. He wanted to have her arrested but i wanted to give her a chance to leave on her own but she didn't. I gave her husband a chance to leave but he stayed. They were both arrested. My mother was charged with harrassment, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and attempted murder.

A couple months later my mother was sentenced to life in prison. I got to keep my job. I had scars that my mother gave me. At first I was ashamed of them, then my supervisor and friend  told me that I should be proud of them. I asked him why and he said that I should wear them with pride because i won and because I showed a courage that was different from anything he had ever seen.
