"Anonymous Roadsong"

by Jeph Johnson

I couldn't take any more, couldn't stand it any longer

I rode my Harley out the door with a million miles to conquer
I was young and on my way tearin' up the boulevard
Heading out on the highway drivin' faster than the cars
I spied a sweet hitch-hikin' gal with her thumb high in the air
And as far as I could tell we were both headin' nowhere
So I told her to hop on and with her arms around my waist
We popped a wheelie and were gone, began pickin' up the pace
Especially when she grabbed on tight full throttle 'n shiftin' gears
Rockin' wild into the night, thinkin' nothin' more to fear
Just ahead on the side of the road, with a radar gun trained at me,
Studyin' my payload and wonderin' "What could that be?"
Stood some law-enforcement clown with a five-point badge a waitin'
To get his little hands around the neck of mine that was agitatin’ him
But we sped by so damn fast, by the time his lights were flashin'
A couple more cars had past and to liven it up we fashioned
To slip into the next small town, taken the exit up ahead
Turn his pursuit upside-down and his disgraced face beet red
We succeeded to elude him but were sure he got our plate
As fugitives we threw him for a loop, still it’s frustratin’
Not slowing down a bit we holed up a night in a motel
There was nothing we couldn't get but we knew we couldn't tell
So bright and early before dawn we were up and on the road
She was tightly holdin' on, her nail marks really showed
We left that town behind and with my new lady on my back
I wondered when that lawman’s mind would jump to a different track
Until then she’s holdin' on, we’re goin' town to town real slow
I call her Jane, she calls me John and we register as "the Does"
