"Treasure-Trove"

Tributes

by Jeph Johnson

way back when
right after high school
there was this throw-away pop song
by the group Toto called
"Waiting for Your Love"
it told the story of a man
who "discovered"
that the love he longed for
was "right in front of him"

there was
around the very same time
another throw-away pop song
by the group Survivor
called "The Search Is Over"
that expressed
the very same sentiment
"love was right before my eyes"
sang the lead singer, Jimi Jamison,
whose name I still remember
because I wrote
a review of the record
for the community college newspaper
comparing him to
Steve Perry
of Journey

who uttered the words

"some day love will find you"

seems back in the mid-'80s

when I was supposed to be
"searching for love"
I didn't listen hard enough to the lyrics
or I may have,
probably,
discovered the treasure-trove
that,
obviously,
I ignored
"right before my eyes"

looking back,
my hindsight is still not 20/20
and I am still baffled
fifteen years later
as to who exactly she was
and why it is so hard
to get a radio station
to play either of these songs
while they pound

"Tainted Love /Where Did Our Love Go?"

into our eardrums
