Winter's Cafe
Karyn Indursky 02/06/2009
Winter slides its blistery
hands down the backs
of layered shirts.
Winter slips its icy
fingertips beneath our
thickest coats and
it matters not
how far up you zipper.
Winter sneaks its head
through pencil point small
crevices of doors, windows
for tickling feet.
Winter aromas tease nostrils
with burning coal, crackling wood
while hot chocolate embraces
our frozen souls
to comfort our aching
backs from shoveling
heaps of God's snowy blankets.
Winter covers us in quilts
as we find someone special
whether it's a child or spouse or pet
to snuggle with
for enchanted memories
of how we kept warm.
Winter traps us in cages
for a few scattered days
to remind us how to play
our board games,
use our imaginations,
or watching movies
while cat paws knock
at your door for
extra love, affection, attention
on a cold, lonely night.
Winter hides spring's beauty
for a few months,
but when winter leaves
seeds will be planted,
the sun will be dancing,
and we will again waltz
into the our next season.
