She's Playing Mommy

Karyn Indursky

She's playing mommy
while they sleep
to feed siblings
crying from starvation
as cockroaches crawl
on unkempt counters,
but money stops
soapy rags cleaning
this mess and
the ratty clothed
children taking insults
from unknowing peers
passing judgment onto
undeserving miniature adults
struggling to survive
when they have
no where to
turn in minds
filled with threats.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this poem while watching Lifetime's movie, "In the Best Interest of the Child."
