Rain

2010 Poetry

Raindrops splashing violently on the street,

causing manholes to quickly overflow.

Gutter water rushing down the roads sides,

the sound in my ears is mighty sweet.

It’s a beautiful sight even though,

the flood water doesn’t seem to retreat.

Then as fast as it came the sun comes out,

all the water helping to make things grow.

Drying out the ground, reversing the tides,

watching numerous vegetation sprout

outside.

The Curtal Sonnet

This variation was invented by Gerald Manley Hopkins. Its two unique features are its line lenght, 11 lines, and its final line which is composed solely of a spondee (a metrical foot of two stressed syllables). It is comprised of a sestet and a quintet. The volta divides the two stanzas. The rhyme scheme is a,b,c,a,b,a, for the sestet and d,b,c,d,c for the quintet.
