Shifting Gears

The rain splashes down

My vision gradually distorting

As the small waterfall

Makes .i.ts way down my windshield

The glare of headlights

Complicate the nerves in my mind

Blinking to regain control

As more water s.wish.es its way

Off metal in beads onto soaked pavement

Hydroplane reaching .i.t's peak

As the needle slowly approaches 90

I can barely make out arrows going left

Pushing the weapon way past its limits

In conditions where surviving is low

Suddenly

The sign folds into the reinforced glass

An intense ride was to be .had.

As the vehicle had entered no-man's-land

And I lay almost g.one. on the side of the road

Blood begins to rush from minor flesh wounds

I'm tightly clutching at my aching side

I don't think I can take any .more. of this

Why couldn't to.day. have gone as planned

Instead of shifting gears right into a ditch

.with. no one to come to my rescue

I could have been sitting on a porch or

Watching a movie cuddled up with .you.

And as I come to my senses and sit upright in bed

The dream of dying hasn't come true,

And that I'm glad of

But the dream of living

Is still a dream

Me and my dreams! It's crazy...I know.
