You have no point of reference of how high you set the bar
Or the depth of the resentment as we argue and we spar
While you parade your perfectness I'm one shade short of green
With your tone-deaf pep talks you maul my self-esteem
Reducing me in size whenever you stop to scrutinize
Like the guys who won't pry their eyes from my thighs
Too wide to slide into your skinny jeans
I'll stay obscure and won't demur as you direct my dreams
Open with my frailties to most profound regret
With my diary detailing the ones you just suspect
I gave you ammunition to weaken my defense
Please help me find the fragments of my shattered confidence
Caught in this tearing tide of primal rivalry
I tried to buck the trend yet was swept far out to sea
I cannot lessen the surly suggestion meant to be off-putting
Or reverse the terse and perverse curse
The cold course comments that cut you all the worse
I wish I'd never endeavored to compete on equal footing
Sit with me in my wondow as the crickets chirp en masse
My future lies in limbo with my childhood nearly passed
Tap your hand on the small of my back and hush me tenderly
I press my chin against your skin releasing memories
Baking, biking, borrowing clothes and building bonds of joy
Simple truths born in youth which time shall not destroy
(No subject)
