American Dream
A year into my third
the honeymoon over
wondering if I actually
ever had one.
Convenience store manager
married to a nurse
money was everything,
even though when I met her
she lived out of her car,
after many long nights
strutting in a bar.
Material things
I had a few
but what I was looking for
I found in the wrong place,
a warm body
a night of heat,
and a cold shoulder to hold.
A wife
little white house
raising her two children
in a small town,
what some refer to
as the American Dream
but in the scheme of things,
I was ripe for the picking.
A nurse
who really didn't like to work
rather stay home and throw back a few.
A man
who worked day and night
coming home to children alone,
an American Dream in the nineties.
Living out of a car wasn't so bad.
