Last Picture Show
I see the whispers
hear the adoration,
I know them well.
Warnings were everywhere,
a make-believe stage
stiletto heels digging in
dancing to the melody of a bard's purest order,
fantasy's greatest romance.
I heard you
but didn't listen,
tell-tale signs
just past roadblocks
on the super highway,
that was us.
Late night discussions
of a cheater's lament
we talked about it,
maybe a little too much.
Naive to past haunts
walls came tumbling down,
love coated innocence
sugared the way
into a belief of non-belief.
Conversations remembered
of black nights blazoned in smoke and mirrors
I didn't see it then,
but I do now
I destroyed your fantasy
becoming a reality
and we all know,
reality bites.
The screen set up
picture show started
I play the bad guy
and I hear I gave an Oscar performance,
just hope everyone knows
it's only a movie
play-pretend
a role someone gave me.
All I ever really did
in reality,
was love you.
