Highway 101
Down in Georgia
back where it was just you and me
before I became a star
and you wrecked our car,
Baby, I thought we were meant to be.
Whatever happened to us,
was it that night I got on the bus
and you were fighting mad and cussed,
or was it when I sang gold
and you caught me holding on,
to that sweet little devil in disguise?
Baby, I swear
it wasn't the scent of her skin
the taste of her kiss,
I was swimming in darkness
drowning in her desires,
but I was innocent.
You pulled out that 45
and I knew I was about to die
but you didn't pull the trigger
you just looked straight at her,
and screamed!
"There goes my dreams
of a farm and family,
you ruined it all
taking my man to your Devil's Ball"
You dropped the gun and ran to our 55 chevy
your foot heavy,
and then you were gone.
The cops came and rang the bell
while I was still wading in Hell
I saw her smile when they said,
"We just found your car, Sir
and there was a lovely little girl dead
thrown out in the dirt,
on the side of Highway 101"
I was crushed
devastated
and all of a sudden alone,
that little devil had disappeared
and you were gone,
now all I have left is this song.
The devil never went down to Georgia
but she did go to Nashville,
one lonely night in a motel
just up the hill,
from Highway 101.
