KIDNAPPER'S PARADISE? ( I SAY LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER)

Folder:
JOURNAL # 41

the media anchor threw her audience
a figurative bone
with her off handed remarks
viewing Pakistan like she did
as a 'Kidnapper's Paradise'
the statistics were steeply astounding
and through friends via many a
conversation about their own living there
her accuracy was at the least somewhat
alarming
soaring unsolved crime rates
abductions widely reported
sex trafficking going unchecked
society over burdened
and under serviced
corruption at the top of
the societal menu every day
the media bleeds its reports
from open public sores of
the ever mounting negatives
hope at times becomes itself
even a festering wound
top off the boiling cauldron
of summer heat grinding
so harshly upon the
already wearily impoverished
and lives are wrought to
be near that to unbearable
though she constructively
painted ugly scenes of
dispirited life for the viewers
I suspect in many ways
to the inhabitants of such
confines
life has its lovely moments
and in the smoke and mirrors
of such clever news weaving
much is missed by an outside
eye
give me the man on the street
let me see his view of life
around him shared by him
and his neighbors
that is the news piece I'd
wish to watch
not a caster who paints
little more than dread and
despair
but one who peppers such
plight with the hopes and dreams
of the people who's lives are being
revealed
one by one
not just as some homogenous generic whole...............

Author's Notes/Comments:

I saw some vague news report recently on the grinding poverty, high illiteracy rate and corruption mixed in with murder, mayhem and topped off with a bit of sex trafficking to draw the viewer a little more horrifically in, sort of news piece attempting I suppose to tell of the hardships the average Pakistani lives day to day. I felt it lacked any truly rounded off view. One I feel cannot just tell of all the negatives like there is no positive to be found. I feel for many viewers such pieces just turn them off as bad news casting like it did for me. I didn't understand why after telling the grocery list of negatives didn't they cut to some charities and the many positives those have on the surrounding communities or show an off set of lives that went against the odds and rose above the harshness of such humble beginnings. So many news stories just tell the horror and try to write off an entire country from one narrow over view of it. I am a strong disagree 'er of such tactics as I am sure some of my more urbane Pakistani friends would quickly agree.
