UPON THE TABLE'S TOP (A LITTLE MORBID HUMOR)

JOURNAL # 41

'Upon The Table's Top'
an urn rests
so easy
on the eyes
beautiful vase
that ,
nobody would
dare deny
though
some may
readily argue
or indelicately
compromise
to agree
a clash of
contemplation
pinches the bridge
of the nose
Tiffany glass
perhaps
maybe even
a counterfeit taupe
but, could we really
put Grandma's ashes
in an eye catching
masterpiece hued
by such confusing rows
but really such a
lovely container
to hold the incinerated
body of a so beloved
loved one
in peaceful, eternal repose
Grandma
with all her simple
hill woman ways
would find this all
why almost gauche
so perhaps Aunt Betty
would better like
her own eternal stay
and languish there to be
a much more
appreciative host
the family, I just learned
will speak to
the funeral director
come later today
Grandma, in the ground
put to the good earth
she so dearly loved
while Aunt Betty
will take her place
there in the urn
putting herself (in death
as she did in life)
for all eternity
on such elegant display
the ultimate in gaiety
death's finest host
eternally put away.....................

Author's Notes/Comments:

A friend years ago told me a story how two relatives died close together and how they (the family) at the very last minute switched and decided to put one in the ground rather than an urn cause the urn appeared far too ostentatious for the older loved one than the younger one, as the younger one was much more brash and sassy so she instead, it was agreed upon would have her ashes put in the urn and the older more simple living relative would be buried in the family plot. It was a very funny incident and this poem was born of my recollection of that conversation from years ago. I replaced the names with my own grandmother and Aunt who died, 11 months to the day, part. They, like the two my friend mentioned were of similar backgrounds which I all too happily explain. Perhaps it is my imagination but as I read this poem back just now to myself, it almost read as southern sounding in its tone. I really enjoyed writing it. I hope you enjoy reading it even half so as much. Sincerely, Melissa
