LURING THE TOURIST

JOURNAL # 41

I simply love
West Virginia in autumn
all that green
fading into rainbow floral
crisp mountain air
invigorating the lungs
the rustling of leaves
to the harkening ear
that hint in the air
that winter is not far
so come enjoy my mountains
the horizons seem to rise and chant
paint for your own mind
rivers more ravishing than
the most vibrant Rembrandt
the gurgling of deep mountain
streams
speaking softly in hushed
reverent tones
to a paradise older than
those towering pines
that tirelessly seem to lean
upon the ridge's
breast and bone
here is where
simplicity meets
the prominence of
generations of
hillbilly tradition
twining like lace
around the hem
of a bride's
hope filled dress
as she shyly smiles
in age old expectation
this is the West Virginia
I love and miss best
so come and visit with her
if you dare
and believe me
you will never regret
your having made the trip
she's wholly that unforgettable.................

Author's Notes/Comments:

I was talking up West Virginia to a friend the other day and he said you should write a travel log which made me laugh. This poem gradually formed a few hours after that suggestion. I grew up there and though I moved away I always looked back fondly and saw it as my home and was never ashamed of where I came from. I would like to believe that this poem reflects that.
