THE SHIRLEY TEMPLES OF THE WORD ( ABOUT WE POETS)

Folder:
JOURNAL # 40

tell me
does sadness hold
the staunchest pen
for a poet
the last dozen or more
random poems I just read
were all on pain and or
it's twin sadness
I slip down a little too
certainly
it is human nature after all
but other subjects prevail
in my mind's creative trampoline
and I could easily far counter
the sad dull gems
that emerge
with bright diamonds of joy
circumstantial pieces
that are fueled by current events
could easily enough
stand their own ground
life is a roller coaster
people
not a deep pit one must
muck through
but to randomly read
as I have done today
I would be hard pressed
to argue such truth
to be self evident
so please my fellow
post poems inmates
don't wallow in your sadness
in a continual loop
poetry is so much more than
therapy
counter balance your lives
by picking out some of it's joy
and polishing it up as well
to show off to the world
so your soul can better
be allowed to
SPARKLE!
a little more
a poet's eyes should be
'The Shirley Temples Of The World'
sometimes
and not overly depressed, miserable
little beings who just so happened
to pick up a pen
and perpetually write out little
more than their pain
over and over again
a poet shines a light into the world
he or she doesn't drag the reader
kicking and screaming
utterly horrified
farther and farther into his
pit of demons
with little respite for the
creative reader in sight
a poet is a soldier of hope
and a lover of muse
caped by wit and eager to
share his or her self training
as an illustrious word smith
he or she is not just a depressed
little person who cannot see
beyond even a moment
of his or her self prophesying pain
but a visionary of such astonishing
proportions
who makes the inhabitants
of the world feel it's a far better place
just because he or she chose to
pick up a pen
and share their beauty's talent
within........................

Author's Notes/Comments:

This poem came as I proclaimed it did. I read more than a dozen poems when I logged on here and I was stunned at just how many were just a very depressed person who wanted to share their pain with the world. I explored further their portfolio each and found the bulk of their poetry was that too not all of course but many. People writing of wanting to die, how they hate their parents or this or that boyfriend or girlfriend. Those poems come sure but when you paw through the body of their work and see that the bulk is just poems like that you wonder how do they get through life if all their eyes choose to see is the pain and not the beauty. They have a talent to write why not sew a few seeds of the happier moments and unless you are locked in and chained up in a dark basement being held against your will you know we all have happier moments or moments of beauty that make us smile so write about those sometimes too. Use your talent more broadly not so narrowly, That is all I was asking in this poem. I have my bad times who doesn't and I do write of those times it shows I am human and my life is not always hunky dory but I want to show people the beauty I find in life every day too Watching a little squirrel play with an acorn in a yard near a stop light I am sitting at can spark a lovely poem in my mind. Children of all ages can easily enchant me with their bubbling spirits and innocent play. There are just as many seeds of beauty out there as their are dust bunnies of despair so all I ask is please fellow poets don't always reach for the dust as poetry is so much more than therapy. Sure for many it can start out that way but when you have written over 300 poems and you look back and realize the bulk of those are about your pain and little else, then I feel you should reassess your life a bit and try to open your eyes and thoughts to the joys in the past too. As I said in the poem life is a roller coaster not some deep pit we must perpetually muck through. I hope my poem did not offend but shed some light on a growing problem I happened to be made most profoundly aware of this morning. I thank you for reading this and feel free to share your input with me.
