ICY SWIMS(Journal #11)

she's an extremely strange sort of child

Grandmother Faye once said

her hair was a dishwater green

while her round little face

a perpetual ruddy red

all she ever wished it seemed to do

was sleep

day, night, evening or afternoon

whenever and where ever she could

she didn't care

why she'd sleep underneath the dining

room table

in the closet

just as soon as she'd sleep in an

available bed or chair

she was an oddball born to a nice

Norman Rockwell town

and no one ever completely understood

her until one chilly February afternoon

when she fell in the local pond and

drown

her mother found then read her endless

diaries

her father, brother  and sniveling

sisters too

they read the imagination of their

sleeping girl's counterpart

who wrote of grand adventures

which took place in the local Zoo!

she, the Dr. Doolittle among twelve

year olds enjoyed the writing of a

story and its many complexities as

it unfolds

like who killed Patrick the Panda

last summer who was thought to have

simply dropped over dead

on and on through her neatly printed

pink pages they thrillingly read

the carefully plotted stories seemed

endless and numbered among a great many

there was even a comical one about a

penguin and a shiny new copper penny

about how with no hands he could not

pick up this small treasure he had

accidentally found

and he tried and tried to get it with

no luck up off the ground

and when he finally did through

some odd miracle of fate

he found he had no pockets to put it

in so he flipped it with his clipped

little wing over the gate

it seems now near that to a terrible

waste not to have known

this strange yet brilliant child

who gave these characters of the wild

a heart as well as a home

no one ever actually knew why she was

named 'Icy Swims'

perhaps her mother knew

one day she would fall to drown in a cold

February pond and die with her ash green

hair , red ruddy cheeks as well as cold

blue limbs

but the name seems appropriate now after

so many years from her passing so young

this poet believes that she should be

immortalized through her work like

Browning

Dickinson

and Poe

as today's Dr. Seuss

or someone the same

there someone among.................
