Two beers down
and she's starting to feel it
walks out twoard the dance floor
only to be stopped and offered more.
Drinks until her head spins
and the strobe light
no longer hurts her eyes
life slowed down to the right speed
she thinks
as the swaying bodies move
jerkily around her.
Twirls away from one man
and falls upon the couch
glimpses a hand
beckoning her
up, up and away to the bar
where they hand her greenish punch
someone's hand is
where?
shouldn't be there
downs her cup
and stumbles outside for a cigarette
in the bitter off-season cold
bums a smoke and inhales deeply
before she's dragged inside
for another dance
but her mind is swirling with alcohol
so she collapses next to the Ping-Pong table
content to rest
if only a moment
before someone else tries to flirt his way into her pants
Something rises in her throat
so she runs to the bathroom
and splashes her face
with cold water from the sink
when she notices the heavy beads
around her neck
Laughs at this and turns around
masacering all the French girls' names
when trying to make conversation
Better luck next time
she thinks
before she's whisked away
to the land of sweaty bodies
and more booze
(which she accepts gratefully)
then joins the crowd
and loses herself
in the lyrics and rhythm
of music she's never heard
