The Life of Vincent van Gogh

INTRODUCTION:

The Life of Vincent van Gogh

It has been said that Vincent van Gogh was one of the most misunderstood painters of all times. He believed himself to be a failure at each and every attempt he ever made at success in life. In his whole career as an artist he sold only one painting. Many historians believe that Theo, his brother, did not actually sell the painting in question at all, but only feigned the sale to boost Vincent's drooping morale. Was he truly a genius, or was he a pathetic creature of insanity and convaluted reason?  You, the student, are to form your own opinion on this point from your research.  You are to be the judge of the facts as they are recorded. Did he really deserve the derision he garnered?

Why were his paintings so different from the paintings of his contemporaries?

What made them stand out from the work of others?

Which artists were his contemporaries?

What characteristics are seen in all his body of work?

How do we know so much about van Gogh and his inner feelings and insecurities?

What makes him such an important contributor to the world of art?

What health problems plagued him throughout his short life?

What do we know of his mental health?

Your job will be to discover the answers to the questions above as you search for the truth in the websites below. Answering questions on paper is NOT expected. Answering them to YOUR OWN SATISFACTION so that you may make an intelligent determination in reporting on the artist, Vincent van Gogh, IS YOUR ASSIGNMENT. The criteria as well as necessary background information may be found here on this page.

In addition to a timeline, each member of the group must provide a written paper on any aspect of Van Gogh's life. The paper must be at least five handwritten pages. Do not write on the back of the paper.  Do not turn in the "sloppy copy". Every member of the group must have his/her own paper--one that is not a duplication of another's work.
