"Flashbacks"
~o0o~
Last eve I heard a whippoorwill
Calling from the night.
The golden moon low overhead,
Filled the yard with light.
~o0o
That plaintive call just broke my heart.
Waves of sorrow came.
My eyes teared up with memories,
OH! I hate this game!
~o0o~
It seems that at the strangest times,
Something takes me there.
The keeper of my dreams must know
Sorrow that I bear.
~o0o~
Yet he (or she), will snatch me up,
Just some will or whim,
And tumble me in flames of hurt,
To remember him.
~o0o~
A sea of daisies in the field,
The crow's startled cry,
The warm wind blowing through my hair,
He just said, “Goodbye.”
~o0o~
I knew not then that n'ere would I
See his face again.
I loved him with youth's purest heart
My husband, and my friend.
~o0o~
The smallest thing brings it all back,
Rolling in my head.
A fog of pain so sore I strain
Tumbling in our bed.
~o0o~
The lightning bugs with amber lights,
Tiny lanterns, fly.
Across your grave, eternal sleep,
Love, please tell me why.
~o0o~
I try to shore my life with prayer,
Pleading, then I cry.
I wish I could re-live tonight
That day we said goodbye.

Author's Notes/Comments:
This is a give me ten challenge from Kris Snow and this is more fun than I had imagined. I encourage anyone to try it.
Jessica, you carried me back to days of childhood, & then plunged me into deep days of Past, dredged up & laying drying in my Now, & then flung me, all so bewildered & crying into a future I have barely yet not stopped dreaming of. You are a master at wringing emotions from the heart; both yours & mine. I could smell the moaning backwaters, the musty will-o-the-wisps glowing across the valleys, & so much more that Southern climes leave so indelible on our young, pliant memories. Thank you. I hope to visit you "there" again, where it's always Springtime. Honeysuckle has no rank on you in the way your word-scents inspire. "J-e, M S.. V.V." Teddy (If this came from "TEN", what will come from "1,000"?
"Poe" I'm not, nor "Rich" am I,
but I'll be famous, b'ye and b'ye !
