On a Grecian mountain peak
On the eastern Peloponnese
Fronting the Gulf of Argolis(1)
Stands the stone strewn remains
Of The Palamedi Fortress.(2,3)
My wife and I climbed the 999 steps that twisted round
Toward the cobbled walls of this summit crown
Out of breath, slowing ourselves
Just to get some air 'til we got there
To sit and stare into the sun's white glare
And wonder if we really cared
For what we saw and felt
For each other and the emptiness in the air
Our bodies tired, so our love seemed there.
A tender glance never passed between us
The scenery seemed more important
Than the love we needed
The shattered walls around us
Stood taller than our broken dreams
Or whatever it was
We lost on the way there.
The sky did not fall and the Aegean stayed blue
We just lost each other again...
And again...and again...and again
The mountain detritus stirred on our way down
But nothing changed.
