Gad's Amulet: (for Ijeoma Nwagbo)

Ijeoma,

You sounded a little hoarse on the phone yesterday,

Do you still have a cold?

Or was it the intermingling wires?

Remember I had told you,

Take two cups of the Bizzi tea

I left the powder I procured from Kingston-Jamaica

On your old lamp stand.

The cam wood ointment

And the melted shear butter

Are excellent therapies, just like the way I taught you,

I wait to hear you sound like yourself tomorrow.

Is Gad up and about?

Are those words he was trying to form

Coming out faster from his soft baby lips?

Does he still hoot

As he steers his remote control sport car?

Has he stopped hiding your TV remote?

Does he still empty your bag, searching for nothing?

Has he now agreed to stick to his toy cell phone,

And leave you alone when you have a call?

Now listen to this:

In the top drawer to the right of your bed,

I placed a brown amulet,

It is meant for Gad

Any day he is able to say his name,

Put the amulet on his right wrist,

And please let me know at once.
