Lonely Night; by Uzoma Nwaekpe

Silent stillness

Black and unlit

Noisened by chirrups and cries

Forced rest to man

You walk by,

Night lonely night.

Like a virgin

Unmindful of wooing hands

You glide over day

Subsuming strong sun

As you come to stay,

Night lonely night.

Why do you rest so short

If indeed you came

To give rest to the world

For no sooner do you sit

Than we see you flee

Away from lovely day,

Night, lonely day.

Hear my word before you go

And answer my charge

For all evil they say

Is done with your cover

Speak one word to me,

Night, lonely night.

Do you do no good?

Do men find no pleasures in you?

Within your walls so dark

Is there no joy?

Speak one word to me,

Night lonely night.

If it be that you have any good

Do this to show it true

Come today and linger, do not flee

Come today and not alone,

Arrive with light so bright,

Night lonely night.
