UKE

Great tree that keeps us

Pulling us together

At its good time

An appearance,

Yearly before you

We come again.

Planted

Not by man

You tower highest

Among the high

Tree that kills trees

Living before the first man

Holder of our great mask

Pulling us together

At its good time

An appearance,

Yearly before you

We come again.

As they take their stand

Around you great tree

May your good shade

Keep our deities safe

As our mask mounts you

May your branches hold fast

Let no ill come to them

Let noevil come around

See your sons gathered

In parts,

In peace before you

Respond,let our ceremonies start.

Let any evil on you fly off

Who ever kept it

Where ever it came from

Let only peace come in here

May our cleansing this year

Like all others before

Come and go in peace.

We stand against all enemies

And say you should stand with us

you whose roots are firm

We stand and stagger

We move and step amiss

You stand and spread out far

Far into our land

Drawing from our depths

For us in these plains..

And your life is for ever

For never shall we look for life here

Above all trees

You stand alone

And through all that come

A witness to our rebirth.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Uke, the name of a strong tree isa gathering point for this eastern Nigerian community. The chief priest blesses the tree in this ode, as the totems of their gods are placed around it, and as the people gather for an annual cleansing at its foot.
