Star

Folder:
2010 Poems

Look up the star,

Shimmering brightly,

A beacon of the dark night sky.

A star,

Burning billions of miles away.

The star.

The light of the past,

It may not even exist anymore.

We only witness its million year old light.

The sky is our greatest time machine,

Yet we pay no attention.

We can't bend time,

But we look into the past each night,

At least those of us,

Who care to look up.

Millions of fireflies in the blackness of space,

Older than anything we know,

But we would rather look at billboards.

They are only illuminated by a hundred years old bulb.

Our museums house artifacts of yesteryear,

A way to briefly visit the past,

One we pay too much to see.

If only we would look up,

But that is asking too much.

We are not a people who enjoy free gimmicks,

We are not a people who care about science,

Care about history,

Care about anything besides their own little world.

We are missing the point,

The points are in the sky,

They are our history,

And they are our future.

The stars.

We won’t exist forever,

And earth even shorter.

So here we are,

Ignoring the past,

Ignorant to the future.

Story of our lives.
