My grandfather’s right desk drawer
Though vague, the sweet memory of hard candy is what reminds me most of my grandfather. I didn´t know him well but the candy a great ice breaker. Every time we met, weather at his office, home, or a lunch the candy would not be far behind. Like most business men he had an office. This office had very little color with classic furniture and last centuries trends. Without fail, every single visit he´d open his right desk drawer and pull out delicious Sweet n Lows. The bag gave certain life to the room. Every time we met he had a different bag. Fruity, caramel, yogurt, swirled, mint, chocolate and many more flavors would melt in my mouth. The candy wasn’t the only thing that gave life and color to his office. Year round we expected the candy, due to a diabetic problem he always carried them around, but during February he also carried balloons. The balloons came in all shapes and sizes, every year during Carnival he would pull out of his wooden desk drawer a bunch of free sample and tell my sister and I to share and use them all at once. Every school year he would open the drawer and there would be shiny new pencil cases and school supplies the best in the market and what all the little girls wanted. There were good visits and bad visits. On the more serious once he’d pull out his glasses from the left drawer and snapy colored highlighters from the right drawer to doodle on our report cards. Every highlighted grade meant we could do better. He was prepared for any occasion when the grades were well he’d pull out a small envelope with money and when the grades weren’t a brochure for tutoring classes. Birthdays were great too the drawer would always carry wonderful birthday presents wrapped in the prettiest paper. I grew to love drawer whatever it would carry, I would have loved it even if was empty. The first year we learned almost everything the drawer stored. The only thing that makes me sad was that our visits were scheduled he was a very busy person and sometimes we didn’t see each other for years, but the drawer meant something. No matter what the occasion in his grey business office the drawer would be filled with life. He put thought and love into the presents and objects inside almost as if the drawer was meant specially for us.
